Panelist Bios
Michael R. Hekle is an Associate at the national workplace law firm Jackson Lewis LLP. He received undergraduate degrees in Liberal Arts and Education from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada, and a Juris Doctorate degree from Hofstra University School of Law. Mr. Hekle was the recipient of the Jonathan Falk Labor Award and a member of the Wagner Labor Moot Court in 2001. Mr. Hekle is admitted to practice in both New York and Connecticut state and federal courts. Mr. Hekle represents employers in a variety of employment matters in state and federal courts and before governmental agencies, including the National Labor Relations Board and PERB, and at labor arbitration proceedings. Substantively, Mr. Hekle defends private and public employers in a wide range of labor relations and employment law issues, including, labor negotiations, representation elections, unfair labor and improper practice charges, and employment discrimination, harassment, leaves of absence, and wage and hour matters.
Johan Lubbe is a partner at the national workplace law firm Jackson Lewis LLP. Mr. Lubbe received B.Com. and LL.B. degrees from the University of the Free State, South Africa. As a Fulbright scholar, he received an LL.M. and a masters degree in labor relations from Cornell University. He also received an LL.M. from Leicester University, England, in English (and EU) employment law. He is admitted to practice in New York, Ohio, Colorado and South Africa. Mr. Lubbe represents employers in various industries, including high tech, financial services, retail, transport, utilities, and healthcare in day-to-day employment law and human resource issues. He is an experienced employment litigator and has represented employers in various employment discrimination and wrongful discharge claims before state and federal agencies and in court. Publications authored by Mr. Lubbe includes a chapter in International Labor and Employment Laws, 2nd edition (BNA 2003 and Supplements in 2004 and 2005) and also in McMullen, J. Business Transfers and Employee Rights (Butterworths 2005 and update in 2006); Clash of the Titans: Complying with U.S. Whistleblowing Requirements While Respecting EU Privacy Rights (co-author with James Beyer), ACC Docket, April 2006; Employment Issues in International Mergers and Acquisitions in the United States, IBA Employment and Industrial Relations Law Committee Newsletter (March 2005); and Managing Expatriate Employees: Employment Law Issues and Answers, The Journal of Employment Discrimination Law (Winter 2000).
Mr. Lubbe also frequently lectures on a wide variety of American and international employment law topics at the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), American Corporate Counsel Association (ACC), the European Employment Lawyers Association (EELA), the International Bar Association (IBA), and the National Foreign Trade Council (NFTC). Mr. Lubbe has been quoted in newspapers such as the Wall Street Journal (Europe Edition) and The Scotsman on employment law developments. He is also listed as a leading labor lawyer in Euromoney’s Guide to the World’s Leading Labour and Employment Lawyers 2004 and again 2006, The International Who's Who of Management Labour and Employment Lawyers – 2005, and the Legal Media Group’s The Best of the Best 2005.
